Palm Kernel Shell Activated Carbon

Palm shell activated carbon is a hard, microporous adsorbent made from palm kernel shells, which are a by product of the palm oil industry. The shells are activated with steam at high temperature to produce a strong, dense particle with a BET surface area in the range of 800-1,400 m²/g. It is supplied mainly in granular form, with crushed and powdered grades also available. Palm shell activated carbon is best suited for applications requiring high mechanical strength, a long service life, and strong adsorption of small molecules in both liquid and gas streams.
Palm shell activated carbon shares many properties with coconut shell activated carbon. Both are hard shell, microporous products. Palm shell carbon is widely used as a cost effective and regionally available alternative to coconut shell, especially in markets supplied from Southeast Asia and West Africa. The two products are often compared on iodine number, hardness, and ash content rather than on raw material alone.
How Palm Shell Activated Carbon Works
The carbon works by physical adsorption. Contaminants in the liquid or gas stream stick to the inside surface of the carbon. Palm shell carbon has a predominantly microporous structure, meaning most of its pores are smaller than 2 nanometres. This is the size range that most effectively holds small molecules. Common targets include chlorine, hydrogen sulphide, low molecular weight organics, mercury vapour, and the taste and odour compounds found in drinking water. The hard, dense particles also resist crushing and abrasion in deep beds, which makes the product well suited to long service life and to thermal regeneration.
Why Palm Shell Activated Carbon Is Selected
The choice between palm shell, coconut shell, coal based, and wood based carbons depends on the duty. Palm shell activated carbon is the right choice in the following cases.
- When the target contaminants are small molecules such as chlorine, hydrogen sulphide, or low molecular weight volatile organics.
- When carbon is used in a fixed bed, it needs to resist crushing and abrasion over a long service life.
- When the application is for potable water treatment to remove taste, odour, and chlorine.
- When the duty is gas phase adsorption, including solvent recovery, vapour control, and odour treatment.
- When the project requires a hard, microporous carbon at a more competitive cost than coconut shell, with a reliable regional supply.
